The UNICEF Representative in The Gambia, Ms. Nafisa Binte Shafique, has urged for urgent action to ensure that every child in the country grows up in an environment that guarantees their rights, safety, and well-being.
In an address, Ms. Shafique highlighted the importance of creating a future where all children can thrive, free from harmful practices and inequalities.
“As duty bearers, we must provide the enabling environment for the creation of a future fit for all children,” she said.
“A future where children develop and thrive in safe environments. Where girls are not victims of harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. Where children with disabilities have equal opportunities, and equal access to health facilities and education, as children without disabilities.”
Ms. Shafique also called for a focus on ensuring that children are not burdened by the impacts of climate change or malnutrition, and have access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
She emphasised the need for children to be at the heart of decision-making processes, particularly when it comes to issues that directly affect their lives.
“A future where children are at the centre of decision-making regarding issues that affect their lives. Put simply, a future where children’s rights are guaranteed, respected, and fulfilled,” she added.
