The Gambian government has launched a thorough investigation into allegations of misconduct surrounding the destruction of seized drugs, pledging to take tough action against those responsible.
The scandal has embroiled the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG), with officials accused of falsifying the destruction of prohibited substances. These allegations have sparked widespread concern, as they threaten to undermine the government’s anti-drug efforts and public trust in law enforcement.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior expressed deep alarm over the claims, condemning any actions that compromise the integrity of the country’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse. The ministry underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in handling seized drugs, describing the annual public destruction exercise as a critical measure to build trust.
“The allegations, if proven, undermine the integrity of our fight against drug trafficking and abuse, as well as the collective efforts to safeguard public health and national security,” the ministry stated.
To address the issue, the Ministry of Interior has directed the Gambia Police Force to conduct a comprehensive investigation. It vowed that no effort would be spared in uncovering the truth, identifying those involved, and ensuring justice is served. The ministry assured Gambians that it would not tolerate any form of misconduct, negligence, or complicity within its institutions.
The government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related activities, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the nation’s security and public health. It called on citizens to support the investigation by providing any relevant information to law enforcement authorities.
“As we continue to strengthen measures to combat the drug menace, we reaffirm our unreserved commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of our citizens and residents,” the statement read.
The government has promised to take decisive action to restore public confidence and uphold the rule of law, assuring the nation that those found guilty will face the full weight of justice. This investigation is expected to set a strong example as Gambia intensifies its efforts to build a drug-free society.
