The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has successfully concluded its highly anticipated “Kansala 2024” exercise, with a captivating VIP protection drill demonstrating the military’s operational readiness and professionalism.
The five-day event, which combined rural and urban training scenarios, forms part of GAF’s ongoing efforts to bolster internal security and improve operational effectiveness.
“Kansala 2024” stands as the first large-scale joint operation of its kind, marking a significant milestone in GAF’s reform agenda. The exercise saw over 700 personnel involved, focusing on improving coordination between the military and other security agencies in response to emerging threats.
At the Tactical Operations Centre, Captain Secka, SO2 J3 Operations, briefed the delegation on the progress of the exercise, highlighting the extensive planning and execution involved. Brigadier General Sait Njie, Commander of the Gambia National Army and Director of Exercise “Kansala,” emphasized the importance of the training in strengthening GAF’s internal security capacity and enhancing the readiness of the armed forces for complex operations.
Lieutenant General Mamat OA Cham, Chief of Defence Staff, expressed his gratitude to President Barrow for his significant financial support towards the exercise.
He underscored the importance of professionalising the military and developing the human resource capacity of GAF personnel to address evolving security challenges.
Abdoulie Sanyang, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the armed forces. He highlighted the exercise’s role in equipping the military with the necessary skills and expertise for future operations.
Minister Hamat NK Bah, representing President Barrow, reaffirmed the government’s investment in the GAF’s development since 2017 and urged the service chiefs to strengthen collaboration and inter-service cooperation to enhance national security.
The event reached its climax with a dynamic VIP protection drill by the State-Guard Battalion, showcasing advanced tactics and coordinated responses.
