Assan Touray, the national assembly member for Bakau constituency, has vowed to vote against the amended draft constitution, which has sparked a wide range of divisive opinions among Gambians.

In 2021, the multi-million dalasis drafted constitution failed to make it through in parliament after national assembly members disagreed on certain clauses.

In response to public demand on the draft constitution, the Gambian government announced a plan to reintroduce the draft document but this time with amendment.

But the United Democratic Party leader lawyer Ousainou Darboe condemned the Barrow administration for tampering with the original drafted document and vowed his party lawmakers would vote against the amended document.

Speaking exclusively to Gambiana, Assan Touray, a United Democratic Party lawmaker, condemned the amended document as a “three-man book”, which he said doesn’t cater for the wills of Gambians.

“The 2020 draft constitution that gives power to citizens, but not this tampered 2024 draft constitution. For this reason, I will vote against the draft constitution,” he said.
