The Gambian Police have shot a suspected assailant and apprehended three others during a violent confrontation at the Jah Oil petrol station on Bond Road in Banjul.
According to the police, the incident happened when a tense altercation broke out between a staff member of the fueling station and a group of violent assailants.
The arrested suspects are Momodou Njie, 30, who was shot at the scene, as well as Ousman Jobe, 25, and Ousainou Njie, 20, who have also been detained.
“Upon arrival, police officers attempted to de-escalate the situation but were overpowered by the individuals involved. As tensions escalated, the officers called for reinforcements.
“Even with additional personnel at the scene, the aggressors continued to resist and advanced toward the officers. To restore order, the police issued multiple warnings and fired warning shots. However, the individuals remained defiant and launched an attack on the officers.
“In response, and in self-defence, the police [officer] shot one of the aggressors in the leg, leading to his immediate apprehension, while two others were arrested. The remaining individuals fled the scene.
“The suspects are facing assault-related charges and are cooperating with investigators. Meanwhile, police efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining individuals involved in the incident,” the police said.
