The Gambia Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge against a ban on female circumcision also known as female genital mutilation (FGM) on Tuesday, as lawmaker leads legal fight against the ban.
The ban on FGM was imposed under former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh in 2015.
However, in 2024, the member of Foni Kansala, Almameh Gibba, tabled a private member’s bill that sought to reverse the ban. The bill was rejected by Parliament amid division among Gambians.
Almameh Gibba, alongside seven pro-female circumcision campaign groups, takes the case to the Supreme Court, hoping to overturn the ban.
