The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) is considering disciplinary action against its officers for allegedly mistreating Kumba Secka, who is accused of stealing in Serekunda.
Ms. Secka was arrested and taken into custody by the municipal police for allegedly stealing D62,500, cosmetic goods, shoe bags, clothes, and some kilos of meat.
As public backlash intensifies over a viral video in which the municipal police are accused of unprofessional and unethical treatment of the suspect, the municipal police chief, DCP Sainey Sanyang, expressed disappointment over the alleged mistreatment of the suspect by his officers, describing it as “excessive with limited regard to her fundamental human rights.”
“After watching the videos, I was disappointed in the manner in which the case was handled by my officers. The conduct of the officers involved was unethical, unprofessional, and excessive, with limited regard for the fundamental human rights of Ms. Secka.
“I have therefore instructed the officers involved to report to my office tomorrow morning, where a disciplinary hearing will be conducted. The matter will thereafter be referred to the Appointments and Establishment Committee of the council for further action,” he said in a statement.
