The prosecution team in the Yankuba Touray witness tampering case has asked for more time to strengthen their case against the former AFPRC junta member.

Police prosecutor, Almamy James Manga, on Monday told the presiding judge, Isatou Janneh Njie, at the Kanifing Magistrate Court, that they needed more time to consider new evidence in the case

“We wanted to proceed but due to circumstances we’ve not been able to make progress.  Investigations have taken a new dimension, new facts have started coming out. Because of that we are trying to consolidate this case.”

Prosecutor Manga requested an adjournment which was not opposed by Yankuba Touray’s defence lawyer.

The case was adjourned to Friday March 22.

Yankuba Touray is on trial for allegedly interfering with the work of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

Touray is accused of calling a TRRC witness, Alhagie Kanyi, and asking him not to cooperate with the commission. Kanyi, a former soldier, ignored Touray’s plea and appeared before the TRRC where he confessed to his crimes and implicated Touray  in partaking in extra-judicial killings during the AFPRC military reign. 

If convicted Touray faces up to three years in jail or a fine.
