John C.B. Mendy, a former soldier of the Gambia Armed Forces who was charged with murder over the extrajudicial killings of the November 11, 1994 mutineers, has been granted bail.

Police sources confirmed that JCB Mendy was granted bail on Friday with the condition that he reports weekly to the Serious Crimes Unit at the police headquarters in Banjul. His bail bond was set at 1.5 million dalasis.  

Mendy was arrested last week at the Giboro border crossing as he attempted to travel to Casamance, Southern Senegal.  He was the former orderly to AFPRC Junta vice chairman Sana Sabally and was implicated in the extrajudicial killings of the failed November 11, 1994 mutineers and their illegal burial at the Nyambai Forest.

His arrest was ordered by the Justice ministry after appearing before the Gambia’s  Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission. The Justice ministry accused him of being an “unreliable witness and for giving a false testimony to the TRRC.”

Mendy, who was detained for three days, had denied the murder charge.
