The Gambia’s Alkalolus have received their first monthly salaries from President Adama Barrow’s government.

President Barrow promised to pay the Alkalolus during his presidential campaign last November.

He said the village heads should be compensated for the tedious work they do on behalf of the country.

A source told Gambiana payment has been made to the village heads at the end of January.

Some of Barrow’s opponents had said the campaign pledge was intended to win votes and that the president won’t honour it.

Others claimed the payment could create division among villagers particularly during the Alkalo selection.
