The Gambia Armed Forces has vowed to ‘severely’ punished a soldier filmed drinking alcohol in a commercial vehicle.

The soldier identified as Warrant Officer Class 2 Ousman Touray was seen drunk and disorderly in a viral video that emerged late Tuesday on social media.

He was arrested after the video went viral and is currently being detained at Yundum Barracks.

Army spokesman Major Lamin K Sanyang told Gambiana: “He’s been arrested and the matter will be taken to court. This boy is not going to waste our time, we are going to deal with this one seriously.

“Now that he’s been arrested the whole incident is going to be investigated to find out what really happened and from that investigation recommendations will come out as to what action should we take.”

Major Sanyang added “he was drunk while he is in uniform and this is an act which is not condone in the military – it’s unethical, it’s unprofessional and he will not go unpunished.”

He however assured the public such act “is not who we are and behaviour like (that) will be given the strictest kind of punishment.”
