The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of the recent elections in Uganda and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.

President Museveni secured 71.61% of the votes in the presidential elections held on 15 January 2026, according to official results.

In his statement, the AU Chairperson expressed appreciation for the transparent and organized electoral process and congratulated the Ugandan people for their engagement and commitment to democracy.

The statement also praised H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, for his leadership of the Joint African Union/COMESA/IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda, describing his role as “sterling” in ensuring a credible observation process.

H.E. Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union Commission’s ongoing commitment to supporting democracy, good governance, and peace across the continent.

He highlighted the importance of electoral processes in consolidating democratic gains while promoting stability, security, and socio-economic development.

The Chairperson concluded by applauding the people of Uganda for demonstrating dedication to democratic principles and expressed hope that the election outcome would further strengthen peace and progress in the country.
