Bairo FC have been crowned champions of the maiden edition of the Suba Ward Preseason Tournament after edging Senior Players 6-5 on post-match penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Bairo took the lead in the first half through Musa Sarjo, giving his side the advantage heading into the break.
However, the Senior Players, representing the experienced veterans, fought their way back into the contest ten minutes before full time.
Sainey Sambou, alias Duta, produced a spectacular free kick that flew past the goalkeeper and struck the stand post on its way into the net to restore parity.
With neither side able to find a winning goal before the final whistle, the championship was decided from the penalty spot. Bairo FC held their nerve to triumph 6-5 on penalties and lift the inaugural Suba Ward Preseason Tournament trophy.
The final was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Hon. Cherno Ismaila Jallow, Suba Ward Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Brikama Area Council; Hon. Lamin J. Sanneh, National Assembly Member for Brikama South; Demba Sonko Bojang, President of the Brikama Sports Committee; Ela Penton, Deputy British High Commissioner; and other invited guests.
In a notable gesture towards grassroots football development, all 14 teams that participated in the tournament received two footballs and D5,000 each.
The successful maiden edition concludes with Bairo FC making history as the first champions of the Suba Ward Preseason Tournament, while the organisers celebrate a competition centred on youth development, community unity and the growth of football at grassroots level.
