The High Court in Banjul has awarded journalist Pa Modou Bojang D15 million in damages and D200,000 in legal costs following a lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Interior, and the Attorney General.
The case stemmed from an incident in June 2018, during which Bojang was subjected to abuse by Police Intervention Unit (PIU) officers in Faraba.
Bojang filed a legal claim, seeking compensation for assault, battery, physical injuries, mental trauma, unlawful detention, public humiliation, and the pain and suffering he endured.
He also sought reimbursement for legal and administrative expenses related to the case.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Sonia Akinbiyi, KJW, ruled in favour of Bojang, awarding him D15 million as compensation for the violations and an additional D200,000 to cover his legal costs.
The court highlighted the gravity of the abuse inflicted upon Bojang by PIU personnel, including officers stationed at the Brikama Police Station, during the Faraba incident.
Bojang was represented by his legal counsel, Lamin J. Darbo.
