Some residents of Banjul Spalding neighbourhood on Monday protested against plans to build warehouse on their junction at Spalding Street.
The residents said the warehouse construction would have serious ramifications for the neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood’s protest prompted the intervention of officials of Banjul City Council who promised to review the plan to construct a warehouse on the said spot.
Speaking for the neighbourhood in an audio shared with Gambiana, Laye Ceesay explained: “They want to build a warehouse and the person wants to build it on the junction here.
“But we the people of this area don’t want it to be built here on the junction because the neighbourhood is too tight.”
He added: “If he is allowed to build the warehouse here will cause obstruction because the highway here is too narrow and it will also be a problem for trucks to stop for it to be offloaded. So that makes us stand against the plan and we engaged our councillor.”
Banjul is being dominated by warehouses and old buildings which are believed to have been in existence since the colonial era.
The dilapidated state of the country’s capital city has prompted scores of Gambians to call for its revitalisation and modernisation.
