Gambian President Adama Barrow and his Senegalese counterpart President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have promised to nurture the relationship of the two nations.
President Faye was in The Gambia on Saturday for a one-day state visit to discuss bilateral relations.
Speaking at State House, Faye said if it wasn’t for the colonisation of the region by Westerners then there would not have been anything like Senegal and Gambia, rather we would have Senegambia as one country.
“We have Senegalese in The Gambia and Gambians in Senegal. Thus, the boundary and national flag is not important to Gambians and Senegalese. What is important is how we nurture our everlasting relationship. I want to assure my brother president Barrow that the Senegal-Gambia [relations] will continue to get stronger,” he said.
President Adama Barrow for his part said: “Government is a transition and anyone who thinks your government will never come to an end you are fooling yourself because some people have been in the helm of power before you.
“Therefore, us in the helm of power will also end someday, and when you leave power your legacy will always stay and it’s also good to do good in order to have a good legacy, because one-day people will say former president Barrow and president Bassirou.”
