President Adama Barrow has appointed Nuha Touray as the country’s new secretary general and head of civil service.

He replaced Muhammed BS Jallow who spent only nine months in the post.

Mr Touray served as cabinet secretary during the Jammeh’s regime. His appointment came two days after Eid-al Fitr prayer as Muslims celebrated the day under lockdown restrictions.

However, many Gambians on social media have criticised the appointment and accused the Barrow administration of cosying up to close associates of former president Yahya Jammeh.

Mr Touray was one of the close associates of Jammeh accused of corruption by the Jammeh Commission of Inquiry.

The Commission which probed the financial dealings of Jammeh and his close associates found Mr Touray and dozens of other people of corrupt practices in the handling of public funds.
