President Adama Barrow has urged Gambians to embrace solidarity and self-reliance as the country marks its 60th Independence Anniversary.
Speaking at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Banjul, Barrow welcomed dignitaries including Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and the Emir of Kano.
“The theme for this Jubilee celebration, Marching in Solidarity for Self-Reliance and National Development, should be at the heart of our reflections and actions as our collective political journey progresses henceforth,” he said.
He described the theme as a call to build a stronger, more prosperous Gambia by honouring the past, celebrating achievements, and working towards a brighter future with resilience and determination.

Barrow also paid tribute to the country’s founding fathers, saying their legacy should continue to inspire unity and self-determination.
Despite political disruptions, economic crises, and resource constraints, he said The Gambia has remained committed to justice and democracy.

Reflecting on recent history, Barrow described the 2016 presidential election as a defining moment, demonstrating the power of unity and collective will in shaping the country’s democratic future.
“This spirit should be strengthened to bind us closer, as we march head-on into the future,” he added.
