President Adama Barrow has praised the strong bilateral relations between The Gambia and the Republic of China and expressed his government’s commitment to upholding the “One China Policy”.

Barrow made these remarks on Saturday afternoon at the State House in Banjul while receiving the Foreign Minister and State Councilor of China, Wang Yi.

Yi is the highest ranking Chinese official to ever visit The Gambia.

Barrow said he was confident of the commitment of the Chinese government to the ties that bind the two countries, adding that being received twice in eight months by President Xi serves a testament.

“I think this is the first time a foreign minister of China is visiting The Gambia. I think this has shown the commitment China has put into this relationship,” Barrow said, stating that the Chinese Ambassador was the first to visit him after he was declared winner in the 2016 elections.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China would continue to stand with the Barrow government in delivering its development agenda in The Gambia.
