Gambian President Adama Barrow has defended his administration’s record, highlighting what he describes as “significant strides” in governance, economic growth, and national reconciliation since taking office in 2017.
Speaking during The Gambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Banjul, he said his government remains committed to strengthening democracy and fostering economic resilience despite global challenges.
He pointed to the country’s ten-year National Development Plan (YIRIWAA) as a key driver of efforts to improve infrastructure, food security, human capital, and social protection.
Barrow noted that the economy has shown resilience, achieving a growth rate of 5.8% in 2024, while headline inflation has dropped from 18% in 2023 to 10% in 2024.
He added that projections indicate further improvements from 2025 onward.
He urged greater national unity and self-reliance, emphasising the need for local solutions to the country’s challenges.
The president said this year’s theme highlights the importance of confidence, self-reliance, and decisive action, stressing the need for bold steps to reform institutions and governance for effective service delivery.
He acknowledged the contributions of Gambians at home and abroad but warned that more effort is needed to accelerate development.
Barrow said resilience and shared determination are essential to positioning The Gambia as a competitive force in the global economy, adding that the country must be self-reliant, resilient, and inclusive for all.
