President Adama Barrow has pledged to deliver a credible December 5 presidential election, telling peace envoy Dr Muhammad Ibn Chambas that the electorate will determine the outcome.

Barrow made the commitment on Tuesday during a meeting with Chambas, founder of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), at State House in Banjul.

“I promise a credible and peaceful election,” Barrow said, urging political actors and their supporters to focus on presenting their ideas to voters.

“At the end, it is the people who decide the winner and loser and we must all accept the people’s verdict,” he added.

Chambas briefed the President on IDEAS’ plans to engage political stakeholders ahead of the election and urged all actors to keep the campaign focused on competing ideas.

The discussions also included proposals for a code of conduct for political actors, to be developed in collaboration with the Independent Electoral Commission.

Barrow also renewed his call for religious leaders to use their influence to promote peaceful coexistence as the country enters the election season.

During the meeting, IDEAS reported that The Gambia’s democratic ranking had improved, according to its study, a development welcomed by the President.
