The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has praised the bilateral relations with Nigeria as the country prepares for Democracy Day.

President Barrow is one of several Heads of State and governments invited to attend Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday, 12 June in Abuja.

Mr Barrow had earlier
congratulated his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari on his reelection as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a message to mark Buhari’s inauguration ceremony, President Barrow said: “on behalf of the first family and the People of The Gambia we congratulate His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on his re-election as President.

“Your re-election is a testimony to the level of confidence that you enjoy among the people of Nigeria, attributable to your wisdom, experience in politics, sense of engagement and devotion to the service and the protection of the interests of the country, especially as they relate to the prosperity, wellbeing and security of your people.”

President Barrow expressed confidence that the cordial relations between The Gambia and Nigeria would continue to grow stronger and that the two countries would continue to work to promote peace, stability and regional integration.

Mr. Buhari was one of the key players in negotiating a peaceful end to the political impasse in the Gambia after the 2016 Presidential Elections in which former president Yahya Jammeh refused to step down after an electoral defeat.
