President Adama Barrow

President Adama Barrow has heaped praises on the Gambian diaspora for their huge contribution through remittances to the nation’s economy.

Barrow made the statement today as he delivered his state of nation address to Parliament.

He said: “As of January 2022, remittances stood at $777 million, representing about 40% of the Gross Domestic Product.

“My government is committed to engage with The Gambians in the diaspora in national development therefore remain high in my government agenda.

“And will continue engaging with them meaningfully and in active global discussion to address migration concern.”

Remittances from Gambians abroad bolster the Gambian economy and make up a huge chunk of country’s GDP.

Thousands of Gambians at home rely on their relatives in the diaspora for their  living costs and other expenses.
