The Gambian President, Adama Barrow, has suggested relocating the Serekunda Sandinka market to a better location following a fire outbreak that destroyed millions of dalasis worth of goods.
Mr. Barrow visited the mangled Sandinka market on Tuesday, where he consoled the affected shopkeepers and stall owners, promising government support to the affected parties.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “I think the best way forward is to relocate the Sandinka market. But we cannot do that alone; we need to collaborate with the councils. These markets need to be modernised. As a country, we are developing, and therefore we need to modernise ourselves.”

He also drove to Latrikunda and Brikama, where he visited the two Sandinka markets that were also burnt by fires months ago.
He has ordered a thorough assessment of the three markets to ascertain the level of damage and to provide urgent assistance.
