President Adama Barrow has asked supporters of the opposition United Democratic Party to join his ruling National People’s Party to develop the country.
Barrow made the call during a welcome ceremony of Momodou Sabally’s sister Ramou Sabally, who crossed-carpeted from United Democratic Party to the ruling National People’s Party on Sunday (31 Dec) at State House.
Addressing the gathering, Barrow expressed happiness for Ramou Sabally’s return to his party following her defection to the UDP after her rift with some NPP top officials during the party’s congress two years ago.
“Today is a big relief for me for two of you from the same parents to ditch my father’s party (United Democratic Party) and join our party (National People’s Party) . I am happy. Today is an exemplary history in the country’s politics, and I am urging those at UDP to come join the NPP. Because what we have done for my godfather no one will ever do that for him,” he said.
Barrow used the occasion to have a swipe at his former political godfather lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
“One thing no one can take from him (Darboe) is his lawyer and opposition. Therefore, if anyone remains with him you will remain in opposition,” he added.
Barrow said it is normal for people to join the political party of their choice, adding he will never have a problem with anyone because of their political differences.
