British athlete Dina Asher-Smith is brewing trouble by delving into the long standing Jollof war between Ghana and Nigeria.
Smith, who won bronze medals in the women’s 200 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, told a Ghananain journalist: “I love your Jollof. The most important thing is I love Ghananain Jollof. Honestly, hundred percent better than the Nigerian.”
Ghanaians are quick to praise the former London Olympic medalist, saying she has won Ghanaians’ heart.
A popular Ghananain radio journalist, Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo tweeted “Dina Asher-Smith may have won bronze in the women’s 200m at the world champs but she just scored a GOLD MEDAL with Ghanaians because of this. Naija in the mud…again.”
Other Ghanaians praised the sprinter, with one tweeter user saying “The truth hurts! Sorry Omo Naijia!”.
But Nigerians would not let this kind of affront to their Jollof ego slide by without disrupting social media. They were already in arms by condemning the British athlete and Ghanaians.
One said on tweeter, “She just lost my vote ! Nonsense!!”
And another telling Fentuo, “Fentuo.
Be careful. Be very careful”.
And yet another said: “Apparently this is going to start a World War of Jollof between Nigeria and Ghana – she should have treaded carefully.”
After making the comment, she immediately realised she had ruffled feathers, and said: “I shouldn’t have said that.”
