Citizens’ Alliance has held mediation talks between police and youths in Sanyang after last week’s communal violence.

Dr Ismaila Ceesay, CA leader, said at a news conference on Thursday that the talks were geared towards finding “a lasting solution” to the communal conflicts

But he advised “for a broader lens to be looked into” over the issues that led to the violent protest.

“Today, The Gambia is hard because youths have no jobs, they are sitting at homes. Basic food cost is expensive ranging from rice to oil.

“Cost of rent is also expensive and youths have no job, even those working class find it very hard to pay their rent,” Dr Ceesay said.

He urged the government to endeavour in creating more job opportunities for the youths through creating life skill training centres across the country to help reduce the growing frustration in the public.

He condemned the burning down of the police station and the fishmeal factory.

Dr Ceesay said they have reached out to the family of Gibril Ceesay, whose death led to the riot, to extend their condolences.

Meanwhile 50 youths detained for their involvement in last week’s violent protest have been granted bail by the Brikama Magistrate’s Court.
