A large crowd of people have taken to the streets in Serekunda to demand justice for Ebrima Solo Sandeng, a prominent Gambian politician who died in state custody in 2016.
Solo Sandeng, a senior member of the United Democratic Party, was arrested after leading a peaceful protest calling for electoral reform.
Nine years on, campaigners say justice remains elusive for many victims of abuses committed during Mr Jammeh’s 22-year rule. While some former officials have been prosecuted or are facing trial, calls are growing for Mr Jammeh himself to be held accountable.
On Monday, a large crowd gathered in Serrekunda to mark the anniversary of Mr Sandeng’s death. Demonstrators chanted slogans including “Justice for Solo Sandeng”, “Never again”, and “No to dictatorship”.
