The death toll from the contaminated cough syrups has risen to 69 and 12 more children are in intensive care.

Dr Amadou Lamin Samateh, minister of health, told reporters on Saturday that at least 81 children are currently infected with the acute kidney injury, as some have been transported to Senegal for medication.

“The total number of patients who had Acute Kidney Injury is 81 and on receiving the mortality figure from Senegal where some of the patients were taken to, we now have a total mortality of 69,” he said.

He called for public support in getting those responsible to face justice, describing the situation as “difficult time for the country and health officials”.

“We assure you that the government will do whatever it can to get to the root of this and decisive action will be taken,” he added.

The Gambia Police have launched a criminal investigation into the deaths and have invited officials from the Medical Control Agency and importer of the drugs, whose license has been suspended, for questioning.
