Gambia health officials said they have started contact tracing the passengers of Royal Air Maroc that brought the first victim of the coronavirus to the country.

A 21-year old U.K. based Gambian woman  tested positive for the virus on Tuesday after arriving at the Banjul International Airport last Sunday.

The Gambia’s only infectious disease hospital, the Medical Research Council (MRC), is helping government health officials trace all passengers on the flight with the 21-year old returnee.

“We are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus, including the sanitisation of buildings,” the council said in a statement.

It added: “We are supporting the Ministry of Health as it works rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had.

“Those identified as close contacts will be given health advice in line with Ministry of Health guidance. There is minimal risk to the Unit’s staff and the local community.”
