Ousainou Darboe, leader of the opposition United Democratic Party, has asked the government to investigate First Lady Fatou Bah-Barrow’s Foundation (FaBB) for reportedly buying a container of medical equipment from the country’s customs department.
FaBB has been embroiled in corruption scandal after investigative news platform The Republic published a report that the foundation bought a medical container on auction conducted by the Customs Department of the Gambia Revenue Authority for D200,000. The Foundation has denied any wrongdoing.
However, speaking to his party members at a rally in Brikama, Ousainou Darboe said: “I read an article that said a foundation donated medical equipment to the country, but they said the foundation didn’t pay duty and they reportedly sold the equipment to FaBB foundation.”
“Even though they didn’t pay duty, what you should do as a government is to charge them and give it to the hospitals. But they said they sold it to the FaBB Foundation. They robbed Gambians and sold the equipment to FaBB Fondation. So, this government cannot fight corruption in the country because they live on corruption.
“So I challenge you Mr President to set up an anti-corruption commission right away, and after setting the commission one of the first things the anti-corruption commission should investigate is to investigate the drugs reportedly sold to your wife’s foundation,” he added.
