The Gambia’s main opposition leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has condemned the Barrow government’s plan to increase tax in 2024 as a ploy to “finance their wasteful spending”.

President Adama Barrow has hinted at a plan to increase taxes during a political rally in Pakau Njogu in Upper Niumi last year.

His government targets to collect 10 billion dalasis in tax revenues in the 2024.

However, speaking at a news conference held at the UDP’s bureau in Manjai Kunda, Darboe, said Barrow’s plan to increase tax will further fuel the hardship that Gambians continue to face.

“So, those of you who really go to the courts to file their processes are now becoming more difficult because it will be expensive for the poor man. So you will be denied access to justice.

“Your land rents are going to be increased; your fees for renewal of leases. The costs of your passports are all going to be increased. So, now the ordinary person will not be able to have access to these services because of the increases in the rates that used to be charged on them,” he said.
