Lawyer Ousainou Darboe has called on Gambians, especially young people, to turn out in large numbers to register as voters, describing the ongoing exercise as decisive for the country’s future.

In an address to the nation following the start of voter registration by the Independent Electoral Commission, the United Democratic Party (UDP) leader said participation in the process is the most effective way for citizens to influence governance.

He warned that failure to register and vote could allow “bad government” to emerge, stressing that those who abstain from the electoral process risk bearing responsibility for poor leadership outcomes.

Mr Darboe also cautioned traditional authorities and community leaders against issuing false attestations to individuals seeking voter cards, noting that such actions could undermine the credibility of the electoral roll.

“If you attest to the eligibility of any claimant and this is found to be false, you are putting yourself in deep trouble,” he said, warning of legal consequences for both claimants and those endorsing them.

The veteran opposition leader further pointed to growing frustration among young people over corruption and economic hardship, arguing that the ballot box remains the only peaceful and effective means of addressing such concerns.

“Young people are crying… but the only way to ameliorate this is to go out and acquire your voter cards,” he said.

Mr Darboe described the upcoming presidential election as “very consequential,” urging citizens not to be indifferent to the process.

He called on voters to support the UDP, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to deliver change.
