The Deputy Imam Ratib of Banjul Alhaji Tafsir has died. He was in his 70s. 

Imam Alhaji Muhammed Tafsir Gaye died on Sunday, according to his family. 

“(The) Gaye family regrets to announce the death of their father, husband, uncle and cousin Imam Tafsir Gaye of Independence Drive mosque in Banjul 

“The sad incident happened Sunday night and the sad news goes to Banjul muslim elders, Supreme islamic council and Rawdatul Majalis and entire muslims in the Gambia.

“He was a devoted islamic scholar and imam who used media, islamic conference, Gamo and friday sermons to preach words of Allah,” the family said in a statement. 

The late Imam was one of the most prominent Imams and scholars in The Gambia. 

He was born in 43 Lancaster Street, Banjul to Biram Gaye and Yai Fatou Ndure. 

Imam Alhaji Tafsir Gaye in 1966 completed his Islamic and Arabic Studies in Tivaouane, Senegal, and in 1974 he completed his Secondary School Certificate in Cairo, Egypt. In 1983, he bagged a Bachelor of Arts and Education Degree at the prestigious Al-Azhar University, also in Cairo.

Imam Gaye was the former principal Muslim High School and had served in various religious and educational committees in The Gambia. 

In 1985 he was employed as Broadcaster of Islamic Programmes on Radio Gambia. Department of State for Education’s Madrassa Technical Panel. 

He was a regular contributor to Daily Observer’s weekly Islamic Column (WAHTANI AJUMA), and also served as a member of the ECOWAS Selected Elders Reconciliation Committee.
