The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) has arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian national after allegedly finding 9,020 ecstasy tablets, suspected cannabis and equipment believed to be used in the manufacture and processing of illicit drugs.

The suspect, identified as Celestine Ikenna Godwin, was arrested on August 24, 2026, according to DLEAG Public Relations Officer Dawda Sanyang.

DLEAG described the seizure of the suspected drug-manufacturing equipment as a significant development, saying it is the first case of its kind recorded by the agency in The Gambia.

The agency said the discovery raises concerns over possible attempts to establish clandestine laboratories for the production of synthetic drugs in the country.

DLEAG said the operation demonstrates its determination to disrupt both the trafficking of illicit drugs into The Gambia and efforts to establish local drug-production facilities.

Godwin remains in DLEAG custody as investigations continue to identify other individuals or networks allegedly linked to the operation.

The agency said the arrest sends a clear message that The Gambia will not be a safe haven for drug traffickers or illicit drug-manufacturing activities.

DLEAG also urged the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to law-enforcement authorities to help combat drug trafficking and protect communities, particularly young people.
