A driver caught with ‘cannabis’ while driving a pickup truck belonging to the opposition United Democratic Party has been convicted.
Yusupha Jambang pleaded guilty at the Brusubi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to a fine of D7,000 in default to serve 14 months in prison.
Jambang was also ordered to pay D2,500 compensation to the vehicle owner in default to serve four months in prison.
The driver was arrested after a police car chase on Saturday in Sukuta after failing to stop at a police checkpoint.
The Gambia Police Force said the driver was arrested after “evidence of suspected cannabis was found in the vehicle”.
However Jambang was convicted for careless driving, unlicensed driving and failing to stop when required by police.
