Drivers Union President

The Gambia Transport Union has rejected claims their sit-down strike is influenced by opposition political parties.

Saihou Mballow, advisor to President Adama Barrow, had claimed that some opposition parties are being behind the transport impasse in the country.

However, Omar Ceesay, President of the transport union has refuted Mr Mballow’s claims.

Mr Ceesay said their strike actions are “not in any way influenced by politics, political parties, or players.

“We wish to state clearly for the record that the union is not associated or affiliated with any political party.

“The union remains apolitical as envisaged by article 15(a) of our constitution which reads as follows: Discussions of Political, Ethnical, Religious and other matters unrelated to the aims of the Union will not be tolerated during Union’s General meetings or any other union meetings or activities.”

“The public is further assured that the Union will remain committed to its aims and objectives while observing absolute political neutrality.

“Service to the people of The Gambia and protecting the welfare and interest of our members remain part of our core values,” he added.
