The University of The Gambia community and the nation have been thrown into mourning following the death of former University of The Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU) Vice President, Yunusa Mbye.

Mbye died after sustaining serious injuries during an alleged stabbing incident in Fajara on Monday, June 15.

In a flash report, The Gambia Police Force said officers at Kairaba Police Station are investigating the incident, which resulted in the death of Mbye, a teacher and native of Bansang.

Police identified the suspect as Mamadou Bah, a 33-year-old Guinean national residing in Fajara, who is currently in custody assisting investigators with their enquiries.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident followed an altercation between the deceased and the suspect, during which the victim sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead,” the police statement said.

Crime Scene Investigators and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department visited the scene and recovered items considered relevant to the ongoing investigation.

Mbye was widely known among students and graduates of the University of The Gambia. During his tenure as UTGSU Vice President, he was actively involved in student advocacy and contributed significantly to campus life and student welfare.

His last public appearance was on West Coast Radio on June 3, 2026, where he featured as a guest on the programme ‘Pencha Mi’, hosted by Sheriff Janha.

News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with friends, former classmates and colleagues remembering him as a dedicated, respectful and hardworking young man.
