The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) held a major promotion and decoration ceremony on Friday, 23 May 2025, at Defence Headquarters in Banjul, elevating over 40 officers across various ranks.

The event, presided over by the Minister of Defence, Brigadier General (Rtd) Sereign Modou Njie, celebrated the promotion of Officer Cadets and Junior and Senior Officers to the ranks of Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel.

Minister Njie expressed deep gratitude to President Adama Barrow, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for approving the promotions, describing the move as a testament to the President’s commitment to the growth and welfare of the military.

He praised the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Mamat OA Cham and the GAF High Command, highlighting their role in professionalising the force. Minister Njie urged the newly promoted officers to embrace the responsibilities of their ranks with integrity and dedication.

CDS Cham echoed the sentiments, commending the officers’ discipline and service. “Your subordinates will look up to you for inspiration, guidance, and courage,” he said. He also thanked the Promotional Exam (PROMEX) Board, chaired by Deputy CDS Major General Ousman Gomez, and the GAF Training School for maintaining high standards.

CDS Cham reaffirmed GAF’s commitment to reforms, improved welfare, and a modern, mission-ready, and apolitical force. He acknowledged the critical role of officers’ families in their achievements.

The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the Minister of Petroleum, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, the National Security Adviser, retired generals, and representatives from other security services.
