The Central Bank of Gambia has requested Nigeria to print the country’s national currency, the Dalasi, in a cost saving move. 

Governor of the bank Buah Saidy made the proposal to his Nigerian counterpart during an official visit to Nigeria, according to reports. 

Nigeria’s central bank governor Godwin Emefiele was said to have accepted the proposal, local media reported.

“We are willing to assist in printing your currency. We can be extremely competitive in terms of cost,” the governor told the Gambian delegation.

The Gambian Dalasi is currently printed by De La Rue of London. The arrangement is “prohibitively expensive and unsustainable”, according to Governor Saidy. 

The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc, which has been printing currencies since the 1960s, is being seen as a cheaper alternative to the high cost of printing the Gambian currency in the U.K.
