The Minister of Justice and Attorney General has announced that the government had dropped charges against Yankuba Touray and Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay.
Ababucarr Tambedou was speaking during a press conference on Wednesday at the Attorney Generals Chamber in Banjul.
“All charges against them (Yankuba Touray and Fatoumatta Jahuumpa Cessay) in respect of these offences have now been dropped,” he said.
Meanwhile, former minister of Local Government Yankuba Touray and former speaker of the National Assembly, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay both served under the APRC regime were arrested and charged with witness tampering and interfering with the hearings of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission.
Their arrest came after Alagie Kanyi’s testimony at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, who alleged to the Commission that Yankuba Touray and Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay called him ‘not to mind and comply with the commission’.
But the reason for the withdrawal of the criminal case at the High Court in Banjul has not been unveiled by the Justice Minister.
However, he promised to reveal the reason for the withdrawal of the case in due course.
Mr Tambedou urged witnesses’ especially the potential witnesses to cooperate fully with the Truth Commission to ensure smooth investigations of atrocities occurred under Jammeh’s regime in order to help the country to reconcile.
“Any attempt to undermine this national healing process in any manner will be a serious consequence,” he said.
