
The Gambia governemnt has said it will carefully study the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Modou Ceesay case before taking further steps in response to the court’s orders.
The Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice on Thursday, the government said it has received the judgment delivered on 7 July 2026 with respect and acknowledged the Supreme Court as the highest court of the land.
“The Government will study the judgment carefully and take all appropriate steps in response to the orders of the Court in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The Supreme Court ruled that the removal of former Auditor General Modou Ceesay from office was unlawful, declaring that his forceful eviction from the National Audit Office violated Section 158 of the 1997 Constitution.
The court awarded Ceesay D4 million in vindicatory damages and ordered the government to pay outstanding salaries, allowances, gratuity and pension benefits due to him.
The government, while responding to the ruling, reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary.
It added that it remains committed to strengthening state institutions and ensuring that all arms of government operate within the framework of the Constitution.
