The speaker of Gambia National Assembly, Fabakary Tombong Jatta and national assembly member for Wuli East Suwaibou Touray quarrelled in parliament as the two exchanged some bitter words.
This happened during a heated debate over a 30 million dalasis travel allowance for President Adama Barrow.
Suwaibou Touray took the floor to address speaker Jatta citing earlier recommendations from the Finance and Public Accounts Committee that should be considered by the lawmakers.
Touray said the speaker was trying to force them to ratify the travel allowance without thorough debate.
Speaker Jatta took exception to Touray’s statement. He said Touray accused him of forcing members to retify the committee’s recommendations.
“Honourable member for Wuli East you must learn to respect people also. You’re making statements that are not true,” Jatta told Touray in ask angry tone.
MP Touray also got agitated by Jatta’s utterances which he described as “unparliamentary remarks”. He quickly demanded Jatta to withdraw the “untrue”statements utterance against his person, adding that he is too responsible to make lies in the parliament.
“What I am saying is true. How can I can sit here and tell lies? Can you withdraw that. Please can you withdraw that,” Touray told Jatta.
However, Jatta insisted he wouldn’t withdraw comments he made against Touray. Some lawmakers were seemingly enjoying the bitter exchange of words between the two.
