The Gambia Police Force has responded to a viral video circulating on social media that shows an officer struggling to detain an individual described as defiant during the encounter.

In a statement issued on Friday, police clarified that the incident took place on Tuesday, 10 April 2025, in Serekunda market, following a request from a family seeking assistance in escorting a relative to hospital for medical care.

The individual, who is believed to suffer from mental illness, reportedly became violent and aggressive during the attempt to provide help.

With support from bystanders, officers were able to safely restrain the individual, who was subsequently taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The Gambia Police Force stressed its continued commitment to professionalism and compassion, particularly in situations involving vulnerable persons.

It also urged members of the public to work in partnership with law enforcement to promote safety, understanding, and respect for human dignity.
