The Gambia Navy and the Senegal Navy have completed a successful joint patrol within The Gambia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), underscoring their commitment to strengthening maritime security and protecting marine resources.
The operation, which took place on December 28, 2024, lasted for approximately 10 hours and involved two naval vessels, the GNS Fankanta (Gambia Navy) and the Lac Retba (Senegal Navy).
During the patrol, five fishing vessels were boarded for compliance checks, leading to the arrest of two vessels, Abo Islam (Egyptian-owned and Gambian-flagged) and Fayako (Senegalese) for violations of maritime laws.
This joint effort is part of ongoing collaboration between The Gambia Armed Forces and the Senegal Armed Forces through the Joint Military Committee, aimed at tackling illegal fishing practices and ensuring sustainable management of the region’s marine resources.
“The operation highlights the strong partnership between the two nations’ navies, demonstrating professionalism and a shared dedication to maintaining peace and security in their common maritime waters.
“Both countries are committed to continuing their efforts to combat illegal activities at sea and protect their valuable marine environments,” The Gambia Armed Forces said.
The Gambia Navy has expressed appreciation for the Senegal Navy’s cooperation throughout the operation and is hopeful for continued bilateral collaboration to address maritime challenges in the future.
