The Gambian government has initiated diplomatic efforts with the Mauritanian government following reports of beating of Gambian migrants by Mauritanian security officers.

A viral video, showing migrants being bundled and beaten, has sparked outrage and condemnation among Gambians.

In response to the viral video, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, the Minister of Information, condemned the incident and assured that the government has initiated diplomatic efforts with its Mauritanian counterparts to resolve the matter and ensure Gambians living in the country are safe.

He said the Gambian ambassador, Sheikh Omar Faye, has already engaged the Mauritanian authorities about the issue, as the two nations work to address the problem facing Gambian migrants there.

“We want to inform the public that the government of the Gambia takes it very seriously. The welfare and safety of every Gambian is our priority. We are concerned about this and we have taken appropriate measures to through the right diplomatic channel to deal with the situation,” he said.
