The Gambia government has announced that fertiliser for the 2025 farming season will be sold to farmers at a fixed subsidised price of GMD 1,100 per 50kg bag.
The move is part of a wider strategy by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security to make agricultural inputs more affordable and boost national food production.
According to the ministry, the market value of fertiliser stands at GMD 2,975 per bag, meaning the government will cover GMD 1,875 of the cost per unit.
A total of 28,892 metric tons, equivalent to 577,800 bags, has been made available for distribution nationwide.
“The government subsidy reflects our commitment to supporting Gambian farmers and ensuring access to essential inputs at a critical time in the planting season,” the ministry said in a statement.
Authorities also issued a warning against the illegal cross-border transport of subsidised fertiliser, stressing that those found engaging in such activities would face prosecution.
In addition, agents with outstanding debts to the National Food Security, Processing and Marketing Corporation (formerly GGC) from the previous year have been given notice to settle their arrears or risk exclusion from the current distribution programme.
