The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad has said that a vessel carrying migrants that departed from Bakau on 18 April 2026 has arrived in Mauritania, with several passengers receiving medical attention.
The ministry said Gambian diplomatic officials in Mauritania have confirmed the arrival of the vessel and are working with local authorities to manage the situation.
According to the statement, some of the individuals on board have been admitted to hospital facilities, where they are receiving medical care, while others have been moved to a designated centre where they are being provided with first aid, food and essential supplies.
The ministry said embassy officials are currently verifying the nationalities of all passengers on board the vessel, a process it described as crucial for consular assistance and communication with families.
It added that the Gambian Mission is maintaining close coordination with Mauritanian authorities as part of ongoing efforts to ensure a coordinated humanitarian response.
The statement further urged the public to remain patient as verification and support operations continue, noting that updates will be provided once more information is confirmed.
The Ministry commended its mission in Mauritania for its swift response and continued engagement in safeguarding the welfare of Gambian nationals abroad.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how many Gambians were on board the vessel or the exact circumstances surrounding the journey.
