Women in The Gambia suffer disproportionately from gender-based violence, study finds  

“Although gender-based violence affects both men and women, it is the women that suffer the brunt of violence because of the power imbalance that gender has created,” the study said.

Details of the report were revealed during a two day training for police officers on adequate investigation, evidence gathering laws and provisions of gender-based violence. 

The officers were trained on understanding gender-based violence  and its impact on individuals and society. 

Laws and provisions, data entry and documentation, prosecution procedures of gender-based violence cases were discussed during the training sessions. 

The study showed that gender-based violence happened throughout a woman’s life and can take many forms including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, economic and social discrimination. 

The public is urged to dial the Gender-based Violence helpline on 1313 to report any suspected cases of violence against women.
