Adama Makasuba, a senior reporter at Gambiana, has been elected to serve on the Gambia Press Union (GPU) Board for the next three years.
Mr. Makasuba is part of the newly elected executive, led by the vibrant young President Isatou Keita, who will guide the affairs of Gambian journalists during this term.
This new leadership faces an uphill task, as the Gambian media still grapples with draconian laws and arbitrary arrests, particularly through questioning under the Barrow government, which had pledged to repeal the repressive laws enacted by Jammeh.
Speaking about his election, Makasuba expressed his delight and thanked Gambian journalists for their unwavering confidence in him and his colleagues.
“I am humbled and deeply grateful to all Gambian journalists, especially those who placed their confidence in me and voted for me,” he said.
“I pledge to represent you with the utmost dedication and unwavering commitment to advancing your welfare and interests,” he added.
